This blog post is a change up from my usual topic of side hustles, but it is so important to my success that I feel like I need to share. This post is about how I layer the goals in my life to constantly achieve success.
Ok first, lets start by noting that I am not always successful at everything. Lets also note that achieving most of my goals is not an overnight success but the achievement of a goal is the product of a lot of hard work.
I consistently find success by layering my goals. I set professional goals, social goals, fitness goals, self education goals, financial goals, family goals and I layer all my goals. I refer to layering goals as strategy to constantly achieve some goals while working hard on other goals.
For me, when I was selling my business last year, I temporarily stalled professionally, but because I am actively involved in local civic leagues and nonprofits I was able to achieve success in helping others. I did not give up or stop working hard on my professional goals, rather I just enjoyed the success that came from being actively involved in my community. Eventually the sell of the business became a revenue stream.
This year in the COVID 19 of things fitness was my area of success. With the gyms being closed, I had to transition from treadmill to street. My distance was just getting getting back to normal when the gyms reopened. I worked so hard to achieve the same distance on the street as I had on the treadmill. I remember the feeling of success and reflecting how much effort that I put into achieving that goal and immediately set a new fitness goal of increased distance and restarting my strength training.
Setting new goals is what I do everytime I achieve a goal. I have a need to achieve, but I have a greater need to learn from the struggle it takes to achieve the goals. The struggle teaches me that persistence, determination, hard work leads to success most of the time. Even if I fail to meet my goals the struggle can still teach me during times of failure, but I never set out to failure only to achieve. Every lesson learned strengthens me.
In running, the distance I struggled to complete becomes easier so that I can work harder to achieve a new longer distance. In business, each new revenue stream that I achieve, my financial goals become easier. The goals achieved by volunteering strengthens my people skills.
I could go on and on, but the point is the cumulative effect of layering my goals is constant success. With each goal achieved I am stronger, smarter, and my drive and determination are pushed, tested, and reinforced with success. Try it for yourself.
