Becoming Essential In The Covid 19 of Things

Essential Employee
I am an Essential Employee

It has been a while since my last post. When I started this blog, my twenty years of experience was deemed unessential and I was unemployed. I spent four months working every side hustle I could find and while I made money, I was still unessential. What I did next changed the game.

I started by looking for what was Essential in my area. Then I reached out to all the temporary agencies in my area and forwarded my resume. I was hired as a lead in a Cross Dock or Transload warehouse. This is the kind if warehouse where containers from overseas are offloaded into trailers to be distributed across the country. The lead position was well below my experience, but I took the job anyway. Four months latter I was hired as an Assistant Operation Manager.

This job has it upside and downside. The upside are the benefits are good, but the trade off is really long hours. The greatest challenge is to this job is managing 70 temporary employees. I always treat everyone with respect while pushing hard to get the job done. For this job I walk about 10 to 15 miles daily and because the hours are do long I only have time to workout winter while the months are cold. During warmer months I can squeeze in a run or two before work. The stress from the job can be overwhelming so exercise is a must. I started off weighing 190 now I weigh 164 pounds. I have focused on my fitness as a distraction. On the weekends I run back to back 10k’s on and follow up with full body strength training with weights. I also use red light therapy to reduce the stress.

The warehouse is not climate controlled. So I have adopted my gear to make my life easier. I changed my layers to synthetics because they are moisture wicking and breathable. I added a heavy coat, gloves and comfortable steel toe shoes. For the fitness of things I have added a Galaxy Fit 2. I have heard mixed reviews, but seems to work for me.

With all of this, why not just side hustle? I ask this of myself all the time. I feel as though I had to prove to the world I could shake this term unessential off my back. Plus I like to layer my income. This goal has been accomplished. Let’s get back to the grind, back to the hustle.
